โœฆ Synopsis

A simple model for the steric factor in bimolecular reactions is developed. The assumptions are identified which underlie an earlier result of Pelzer and Wigner and of Johnston, when one of the reagents is an atom. The treatment is then extended to reactions between two molecules. In each case it is found that, as extraneous material is added to the molecular reagents, the steric factor will decrease but the pre-exponential factor will tend to remain constant. Contact is then made with analogous results from the statistical adiabatic model.

This paper addresses the overall behavior of a reaction mixture in which many irreversible bimolecular reactions occur in catalyst particles of three different shapes (slab, long cylinder, and sphere). Specifically, we develop a priori upper and lower bounds on the effectiveness factor for the mixtu
