✦ Synopsis

Treatment of 2-bromodeoxybenzoin with cyanide ion in the presence of adsorbent (silica gel or alumina) stereoselectively gives cis-2,3diphenyl-2-cyanooxirane in a good yield.

The mechanism is discussed.
