Abstract
A model of an adiabatic continuously stirredβtank reactor in which a single exothermic second orderβgas liquid reaction occurs has been developed. The interactions between the rate of the chemical reaction, the diffusional resistances, and the solubility may cause the occurrence of up to five steady state solutions, even though no more than three solutions can be attained when the same reaction is carried out in a sinle phase CSTR. A parametric study is used to examine the sensitivity of the model to the value of several parameters. Topological arguments are used to obtain a simple instability criterion.
