-l%e steady state current mehod for characterizing solid electrolytes developed by Bruce and Vincent, J. electroanal. Chem. 225, l(l987) and Bruce et al., J. electroanal. Chetn. 271,27 (1989). has been extended to electrolytes of the type MX, which give rise to MX+ and X-as charge carriers Where MX, is present only as MX+ and X-, ie no uncharged MX, species are present, under idcal conditions, it is shown that I '= 4u+ u-40, D_ I, (u+ + IL)' = (D, + D_)' where "+" denotes MX+ and y-n denotes X-, whereas in the case where MX, is also present, it is shown that I '= 40, D-+ 40, Kc+,,(D, + D-) I, (D, + D-)' + 4D,,Kc+.,(D+ + D-)
where K is the association constant of MX, from MX+ and X-and c+.c is the initial concentration of MX+.
