✦ Synopsis
The early stages of decomposition of Guinier-Preston zones (G.P. zones) in Al±16 wt% Ag and Al±16 wt% Ag±0.1 wt% Zr alloys were investigated through creep measurements and electron microscopy observations. It was found that the strengthening and softening of the alloys has been achieved during the formation of metastable phases (G.P. zones and g H -phase) in the ageing temperature range (428 to 498 K). TEM investigations confirmed that the addition of zirconium to the Al±Ag alloy accelerates the formation and coarsening of the metastable phases. The mean values of activation energy of both alloys were found to be equal to that quoted for precipitate±dislocation interactions.
