✦ Synopsis

The most important diagnostic advance in the detection of bone metastases is the development of bone scanning techniques utilizing 85Sr and shorter lived isotopes. The main value of bone scanning is its use in screening for suspected occult bone metastases. In addition, it can assist in the differential diagnosis of equivocal bone lesions found on skeletal x-ray surveys. Bone scanning can be used as a means of serially following the responses of bone metastases to various forms of treatment in breast cancer.

Abstract The value of initial and serial isotope bone scans was assessed in 685 patients with operable primary breast cancer. Nineteen (2Β·8 per cent) patients had a positive initial scan and negative skeletal radiographs; only nine of these developed other evidence of metastatic disease after a mean
