✦ Synopsis


The distributions of annual flux and time interval of perihelion passages of long-period comets are examined statistically. The former is found to be well represented by the Poisson distribution, while the latter by the exponential one. This means that the perihelion passages of longperiod comets are an almost random phenomenon, at least within the time scale of a few hundred years, even if the samples are affected by observational selection and/or the effect of physical disruption.

We consider the changes of cometary perihelion distances as a process of diffusion in the value of q, due to perturbations by stars. We find more comets at large p values than is observed. This suggests that a large number of long-period correts is not observed.

The inverse dust tail model (M. Fulle 1989, Astron. Astrophys. 217, 283-297) is applied to a dust tail image of short-period Comet 46P/Wirtanen obtained by K. Jockers et al. (1998, Astron. Astrophys. 335, L56-L59) to provide information on the dust environment which will be probed by the ESA Rosetta
