✦ Synopsis

Two statistical models of extreme observations are examined and recent developments on determination of the domains of attraction and selection of the largest observations are presented. The results are appropriate in cases where the actual sample size is very large and perhaps unknown. The use of the introduced methods is illustrated by two examples.
