✦ Synopsis

The An&r ofP/@cs is intended to provide a medium for original work of broad significance, in which the author will be able to give attention to clarity and intelligibility, so that his paper may be read by the widest possible audience. It is, of course, impossible to require that papers in the Annals be readily understandable by all. However, a reasonable criterion might be that sufficient detail and background should be given so that a reader who had worked in the field within the last few years would be able to follow the arguments and understand their signi6cance without undue hardship. In this way we hope the Annals can encourage those who have interests in several fields of physics and who like to think of physics as a unified structure of high aesthetic appeal.
