โœฆ Synopsis

A WONDERFUL SUCCESS Held under the joint auspices of the Soci6t6 Franqaise de M6canique and the Soci6t6 Fran~aise d'Acoustique, this first congress on the prediction of noise radiated by vibrating mechanical structures was a genuine success. This scientific gathering distinguished itself by a three-faceted originality. Firstly, it was to our knowledge the first occasion on which the objective was to focus specifically, and in depth, on the state of the art of predictive methods in vibroacoustics. Secondly, no effort had been spared to ensure the active participation of both university researchers and industry representatives. The presence of engineers from industry proved itself a major asset, as much from the level of the relevance of the problems presented as from the response relative to the actual effectiveness of approaches that might have been proposed by various researchers. Thirdly, the two aspects, fluid and structure, were definitely present and this allowed everyone to define better the scientific and technical questions to the theme under review (see Fig. 1).

This congress attracted more than 200 participants, most coming from Europe. All were greatly appreciative of the excellence of the food--both scientific and gastronomic--offered them. A tip of the hat goes to those responsible for the flawless, impeccable organization, marked by an hospitableness from which many other congresses should derive inspiration.

I found Everette Gardner's review of exponential smoothing to be very interesting. It is successful in presenting a broad view of the current state of exponential smoothing. The paper is noncontroversial in that its aim is to summarize previous research on exponential smoothing rather than to come t
