Neuropoietic cytokines, including ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), have survival effects on cells of the peripheral and central nervous systems (PNS and CNS). CNTF and LIF also produce differentiation in some cells of the PNS.
