โœฆ Synopsis

In June this year, a Glasgow-based company won a curious contract -to develop Dysprosium Gallium Garnet crystals for an advanced demagnetisation refrigerator cooling system. The crystals, when placed in a strong magnetic field of around 2T will cool down to 10mK when the field is switched off, and can maintain the temperature for several years. This DFC system for space X-ray detectors overcomes a problem of current liquid helium cooling, which requires biennial helium replacement.
