A detailed isotopic analysis of a half metre core from the Cheshire Formation stromatolites of the Bclingwe greenstone belt, Zimbabwe, is presented, including carbon isotopic ratio measurements on the kerogen fraction. and carbon and oxygen isotope ratio measurements on the limestone. An interpretation of these ratios is offered which views the limestone as primary, having been precipitated in fairly low energy environments, and entrapping varying amounts of organic debris in a warm marine embayment.
