✦ Synopsis

In recent years, the stabilized jellium has started to replace the ordinary jellium in many surface calculations. The present article describes the stabilized jellium starting from the hierarchy of approximations that lead to the model and its variants. We discuss several useful relations or sum rules connecting bulk and surface properties. The applications of the model to the calculations of the ground-state surface properties of simple metals, as well as for the response of stabilized jellium model to electromagnetic ®elds, are reviewed.
