I have read with interest the above detailed paper by Stephansson (1971). The work involved in the paper -analytical, experimental and computational -is considerable and very commendable.

A derivation similar to that for deflections (pp.12-15 of the paper) in case of configuration I, H < l/5, has been given by Adler (1961) in which he has adopted the theory of thin beams on elastic support for assessing the stability of a mine opening. He too resorted to experimental corroboration by models.
