We study the stability of the limit cycle of parallel flow and counter flow heat exchangers PI-controlled byjlow rate manipulation. The multi-scale perturbation method is used to investigate the stability of the limit cycle of a higher order polynomial nonlinear system which is an approximate model of heat exchangers. A condition is obtained for the limit cycle to be stable or unstable to a small deviation of feedback gain from the stability boundary. Several examples of paralleljow and counterjow heat exchangers are used to illustratefeatures of the dynamics of heat exchangers.
