โœฆ Synopsis

The stability of homogeneous deformations of a compressible, elastic body of cylindrical shape is studied. Two types of boundary conditions are considered: one in which the displacements on the bases are controlled and one in which the displacements on the lateral surface are controlled. As particular examples, the stability conditions for uniaxial tension and simple shear are examined.

We investigate the relationships between the infinitesimal elastic stability of homogeneous deformations and the zero moment condition. Under dead loading, for physically reasonable constitutive assumptions, we find that if the infinitesimal deformation satisfies the zero moment condition, it is sta

A controllable static deformation is a deformation that may be maintained in all materials of a given class under the action of surface forces alone. For compressible, homogeneous, isotropic elastic materials the only controllable deformations are homogeneous. However, it is known that there are sol
