โœฆ Synopsis

The two test conductors and the test facility SUL TAN are described. The critical energy has been measured as a function of disturbance length and duration, conductor current, background field, helium inlet temperature and pressure. The measured values are given and compared with those calculated numerically with the program L ONSA. An estimate of the accuracy of LONSA is made. For one series of measurements an approximate analytical calculation of the critical energy was made to show the different effects involved. Finally, a number of effects, which can lead to disturbances are briefly mentioned.

Due to the inherently transient behaviour of force cooled conductors there are no simple stability criteria. It is however possible to define a critical energy and to take it as a measure of stability. The critical energy is the minimum energy of a disturbance necessary to cause a quench of the cond

A numerical analysis of the thermal stability of a superconductor composite cooled by forced-flow supercritical helium has been performed. The analytical model consists of simultaneous two-dimensional coolant flow equations and a one-dimensional superconductor equation. The equations of conservation
