✦ Synopsis
We report the observation of doubly charged clusters below the kinetic critical size for Coulomb fission. Ultraviolet irradiation of cold, singly charged alkali-halide clusters efftciently generates the corresponding doubly charged clusters, allowing detection of a range of CsI and KBr clusters above and below the critical size, n,= 19. These include an island of particularly high stability, n = 12-13, that can be explained by computed structures. By varying the photon energy, we have also demonstrated the role of . _
excess energy in determin&g fission decay rates.
