Immobilized cells of a Cifrobacfer species scavenge cadmium with high efficiency from challenge flows containing CdZ+. Metal uptake by the cells is mediated by a cellbound phosphatase which liberates inorganic phosphate from an organic phosphate to precipitate cadmium as cell-bound metal phosphate.
