โฆ Synopsis
This paper examines the linearized Israel-Stewart theory of relativistic dissipative fluids with the fluid four-velocity chosen to be a timelike eigenvector of the stress-energy tensor. It is shown that the conditions that a fluid described by the theory must satisfy to possess equilibrium states which are stable for linear perturbations are equivalent to the conditions necessary to guarantee that these perturbations propagate subluminally via hyperbolic differential equations. These properties, and nonlinear behavior which is superior to that of the Israel-Stewart theory with fluid four-velocity chosen parallel to the particle number current, suggest this theory is a better choice for applications.
