β¦ Synopsis
Cancer of the base of the tongue is usually not diagnosed until it is fairly advanced; the growth and extension of the tumor around the primary site often involve adjacent anatomic areas of functional importance, such as the pharynx and larynx. Multiple, bilateral lymph node metastases are usually present and make appropriate treatment planning more difficult. The available treatments, surgery or radiotherapy or a combination of both, offer less than ideal results, both in tumor eradication and possible complications and sequelae. The present "problem case" is an example of cancer of the base of the tongue detected relatively early, for which the consultants offer their treatment plans.

## Abstract ## Background Our aim was to report the outcomes of base of tongue cancers treated with chemoradiotherapy. ## Methods Between 1990 and 2004, 127 patients with stage III or IV base of tongue cancer were treated with chemoradiotherapy on protocol. Indications included nodal involvement
## Abstract ## Background. The purpose of this study was to examine the longβterm outcome of a cohort of patients with unresected base of tongue carcinoma who received interstitial brachytherapy after comprehensive external beam radiation therapy. ## Methods. Between 1983 and 2000, 122 patients
Between January 1954 and August 1971, 174 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue were treated with megavoltage external beam using conventional treatment times. Since the cumulative recurrence rate was 90% by 2 years, patients surviving 2 years without primary recurrences ar
Background. Nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content is a prognostic factor in several tumors, and decisions regarding treatment have been made using this parameter. Nevertheless, there is no agreement in head and neck cancer. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether tumor DNA co
