✦ Synopsis

Four novel diterpenoids, spongiabutenolides A -D (2-5), all of which contain a yhydroxybutenolide moiety, have been isolated from a Philippines marine sponge of the genus Spongia.

The structures of spongiabutenolides A -D (2-5) and the methyl esters 6 and 7 were elucidated by interpretation of spectral data. Spongiabuteonolide A (2) was synthesized from spongia-13( ),14diene-I O-oic acid ( I ) by singlet oxygen oxidation.
