✦ Synopsis

The observed splitting of the carbonyl stretching frequencies of hydrogen bonded carboxjrlic acid dimers has been esplained by other authors in terms of transition dipole coupling. In this paper it is shown that the transition dipole interaction for carbonyl groups gives very small splittings when rasonable dipole moment changes are used.
