«Splendid’s» no se publicó hasta 1993, a pesar de haber sido escrita en 1948. Se salvó gracias al editor del dramaturgo y al filósofo Jean-Paul Sartre, quienes la redescubrieron por un manuscrito olvidado en un cajón. Fue en los años setenta y Sartre llegó a afirmar que la fuerza y la calidad de esta obra era superior a «Las criadas», la obra cumbre de Genet.
