โœฆ Synopsis

A model for 3He near its magnetic ordering temperature proposed by Papoular is discussed. Using the transfer integral formalism, we calculate the thermodynamic properties and in particular the temperature dependence of the entropy. These are compared with the properties calculated from a Schr6dinger-like equation approximation to the transfer integral equation. The relation between the entropy and the potential energy which drives the order parameter is examined. Modifications to the potential necessary to give the experimentally observed entropy are described.

A simple phenomenological, nonlinear lattice-dynamical representation of magnetic ordering in solid 3He is proposed and discussed. It appears to support the idea that low-energy spin-wave-like excitations are absent, due to the self-consistent coupling between spin and lattice variables. The model,
