โฆ Synopsis
Nitroxides have been used as molecular motion probes in lipid and membrane systems since 1968. The potential information is greater than has yet been obtained. Such information as local viscosity, local polarity, anisotropic motion, anisotropy of rigid systems, interaction with other nitroxides or reactive chemicals, translational motion, and several derived parameters as well can be obtained from properly executed experiments. We deal with one derived parameter here, the Arrhenius activation energy of molecular motion (EQ). Melting points can be observed in hydrocarbon systems by plotting rotational correlation time (T c or an approximation of To, To) against temperature:
* 11 T~ = K Wo L\ h_ ,/ -If To_+ 10 -9 sec, then T o is a zeroth order approximation.
