✦ Synopsis
The excitation-transfer reaction between Ns(A 'Z: ) and CFs(8 'A,) has been studied in a discharge-flow reactor. Dispersed emission spectra show that the spin-forbidden excitation CFs(H 'B, +x 'Ai ) is favored over the spin-allowed transition CF, (A 'Bi +% 'A, ) . The selectivity is discussed in terms of conservation of total electronic spin and energy defect in the transfer process. The present observation is the first successful excitation of a carbene by energy-transfer from Ns (A 'Z $ ) . Several reasons for the previous lack of success (Cao and Setser) are found from careful comparison of the concentrations of reagents and power of the discharge.
