β¦ Synopsis
The absorption and emission spectra of Tm 3+ -and Ho 3+ -doped Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 crystals have been measured in the 1.5-2 lm region. The lifetimes of the lowest excited states have been measured at 10 and at 298 K. The cross sections of the (Tm) 3 F 4 M 3 H 6 and (Ho) 5 I 7 M 5 I 8 transitions have been estimated and used to determine the (Tm) 3 F 4 ! (Ho) 5 I 7 energy transfer parameter. These results are discussed in order to evaluate the potentialities of this material as active medium in solid-state lasers operating at 2 lm.

The optical properties of the rare elements Tm 3+, Ho 3+ and Yb 3+ were systematically investigated in various glasses. The Tm 3 + doped aluminozircofluoride glass shows higher quantum efficiency, longer lifetime and stronger fluorescence intensity than Tm 3 Γ· doped YSGG crystal and other Tm 3 Γ· dop
