✦ Synopsis

Infrared spectra of ethyl chloroacetate and ethyl bromoacetate in the region 4000400 cm-' have been recorded, together with laser Raman spectra of the molecules in the region 4000-100 cm-'. These spectra, in conjunction with CND0/2 computations, were employed to study the conformational behaviour of the molecules. A normal coordinate analysis was carried out for the cis-trans isomers of these molecules and supported the frequency assignments fairly well.
