✦ Synopsis
We show empirically how the effect of the instrumental polarization of the spectrograph can distort the shape of the intensity profiles in sunspots. In order to avoid the problems an analysis of the polarization of the. light should be performed at the entrance slit of the spectrograph.

Distortions of asymmetric Fano protiles for a molecular system above a metallic grating surface are investigated within a simple model. A double-peak feature as well as a shift of the profile window are observed due to the surface plasmon mode.
intensity factors for bands of the C-A transition of the A1F molecule are calculated. A reinvestigation for the lines of (0, 0) band of the C-A system in sunspot spectra is suggested, so as to resolve the question~tble existence of A1F absorption lines in sunspots.
Observations of the MglI h line in the umbrae of five sunspots show a spread of a factor of 3 in peak intensity. This range is larger than, and brackets, the range found in a single umbra by Lites and Skumanich (1982).
