Under continuous irradiation in a low temperature glass or by flash photolysis in fluid solution, I-phenylcycloheptene gives rise to a transient absorption that is assigned to the strained "trans" form of the cycloalkene postulated to be the reactive intermediate in the photochemistry of cycloheptene derivatives.
