✦ Synopsis

We have carried out the specific heat C P Γ°TÞ measurements on CeMg 2 Γ°Cu 1Γ€x Ni x Þ 9 Γ°x ΒΌ 0 and 0.02) in which the Ce atoms are a twodimensional arrangement. The large anomalies are observed at the NeΒ΄el temperature T N ΒΌ 2:5 and 1.7 K for x ΒΌ 0 and 0.02, respectively. The magnetic specific heat C mag (T) of the samples for both concentration show the Schottky-type anomaly around 30 K. This is originated from the crystal electric field (CEF) splitting of the 4f states with the first excited level D 1 and the second excited level D 2 from the ground state. The obtained values of these (D 1 =k B ΒΌ 78 K and D 2 =k B ΒΌ 143 K) on x ΒΌ 0:02 are larger than the values on x ΒΌ 0 (60 and 130 K). The enhancement of the CEF splitting of the 4f states might result from the chemical compression due to substitution of small amount of the Ni ion for the Cu ion.

We analyze the specific heat for the class of models treated in a previous paper. It is shown that if a certain condition is fulfilled (eq. ( 3)), then the specific heat diverges logarithmically. This fact is established without recourse to the details of the interactions between the spins; thus, we
