β¦ Synopsis
The magnetic field dependence of the specific heat and the electrical resistivity and its pressure dependence have been investigated for the heavy-fermion compounds U 1 ThxPt 3. With increasing Th concentration, the coefficient of the electronic specific heat, C~ T, is further enhanced. Antiferromagnetic instabilities occur in a narrow concentration range of Th (0.01 < x < 0.10). This antiferromagnetic state does not destroy the heavy-fermion state but coexists with it. Strong influences of magnetic field and pressure on the antiferromagnetic state indicate that the magnetic order is induced by a very delicate balance of electronic states at the Fermi surface. At higher Th concentration, a Kondo-type of resistivity curves are observed.
