โฆ Synopsis
The density of spa-water at constant pressure depends both on the salinity and on the temperature. Ry a constant temperature it depends solely on the total salinity, as the latter always shows the same relative composition. Thence wholly equivalent expressions of the composition of sea-water may be had by means of the salinity (or the "chlorinity") and the density by a constant temperature. In stead of this density we shall speak of specific gravity. In oceanography it is represented by two different expressions: either the specific gravity of the sea-water by 0 C referred to distilled water of 4 O C (s %), or the specific gravity of the sea-water by 17,5 O C referred to distilled water of
