This paper introduces the special issue on model transformations. The objective of this special issue is to provide a representative sample of advanced research being carried out in the emergent field of model transformation. The papers contained in this special issue provide an overview of current open issues and identify potential lines for further research. They contribute in different respects to the area of model transformation, from its foundations to the potential benefits it may bring to the emergent field of Model-Driven Engineering.
