✦ Synopsis

On the occasion of his retirement from the University of Western Ontario, a one day workshop in honour of professor Ian B. MacNeill was held during the Ninth International Conference on Quantitative Methods for the Environmental Sciences. The conference took place on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, July 3±6, 1998. This issue of Environmetrics contains the proceedings of this workshop. It is published in recognition of Ian's contributions to the statistical sciences in general, and to the establishment of Environmetrics and the International Environmetrics Society in particular. Most of the papers published in this issue deal with areas in which Ian has made research contributions. We take this opportunity to thank those who spoke at and attended the workshop, and to those who contributed to this issue.
