✦ Synopsis
It was organized by The International Environmetrics Society (TIES) and jointly chaired by A. H. El-Shaarawi and R. Viertl. The aims of these conferences are to promote the development and application of quantitative methods in environmental assessment and to devise a mechanism for maintaining regular contacts among statisticians, mathematicians, and environmental scientists.
More than 100 papers, six of which were special lectures, were presented at the conference on a wide range of topics. Approximately 35per cent; of the papers were submitted for possible publications in two special issues. Approximately half of the accepted papers have already been published by the Austrian Journal of Statistics (27(1&2) 1998). The rest of the papers are published in this issue.
