✦ Synopsis
Special issue celebrating the 80th birthday of Robert Steinberg
This issue of the Journal of Algebra is dedicated to Professor Robert Steinberg on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He served as an editor of the journal from 1981 to 2000.
It is difficult to overstate the impact and influence of Steinberg's work on the development of the theory of algebraic groups and of finite groups of Lie type. Much of the theory up to this day draws from his ideas and his elegant mathematics. The contributions here are a tribute to the lasting significance of his work.
We are grateful to Professors Michel Broué and Jan Saxl for their advice and encouragement. We also want to express our thanks to the London and San Diego staff of Elsevier for their help and cooperation.
We are pleased to present this issue with great respect and admiration to celebrate an extraordinary mathematician and dear friend.
