โฆ Synopsis
This month special feature article is dedicated to the characterization by MALDI MS of metal containing compounds. Indeed, organometallics and other coordination compounds are found in numerous applications ranging from industrial catalysis, electronics to medicine. A prime example is cisplatin, the fi rst commercialized anti cancer metallodrug. The analysis of this class of compounds is in some cases non-trivial and quite challenging. One of the forefront fi gures of organometallic compound analysis by mass spectrometry is Mark Wyatt (Ph.D.) from the Mass Spectrometry Service Center at Swansea University in the United Kingdom. He reviews here the history of metal containing compounds by MALDI MS but also introduces the recent developments in the fi eld as well as the future challenges that need to be addressed and overcome.
