✦ Synopsis
In this article, the stability of incompressible pipe flows induced by wall injection is investigated. A local linear spatial theory is applied with a special treatment near the axis due to the choice of the cylindrical coordinates. It shows that the flow is stable near the headwall until it reaches a critical axial position. The flow becomes unstable downstream for a range of frequencies which increases with the distance to the headwall. Unstable two-dimensional and also three-dimensional modes are exhibited. Comparison with the available experimental results confirms the existence of amplified instability waves and the presence of at least some of the predicted modes.
