✦ Synopsis

We have studied the effect of vision on the paths of unrestrained reaching movements towards a visual target in patients with cerebellar degeneration ( n 4 ) or Friedreichs ataxia (n=5), and in normal subjects (n=8). From a fixed starting position subjects reached out to touch an illuminated target in response to a tone. Eight movements to each of seven targets were performed in random order in a blacked out rwm with a light mounted on the finger tip. This procedure was repeated in a second block of trials during which the target and finger lights were extinguished at the beginning of the movement.
