✦ Synopsis

The title compound, C 20 H 16 O, (I), whose 9-aryl group is freely rotating in solution, crystallizes exclusively as its sp rotamer, which exhibits intermolecular hydrogen bonding involving OÐHÁ Á Á%(¯uorene) but not involving OÐHÁ Á ÁOH. The molecules pack as centrosymmetric dimers incorporating two OÐHÁ Á Á%(¯uorene) hydrogen bonds. Although (I) melted sharply without decomposition, its melt failed to recrystallize on cooling.
