β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Four monsoon indices (the meridional wind shear index (MWSI), the zonal wind shear index (ZWSI), the 850βhPa zonal wind index (850ZWI) and the 850βhPa zonal and meridional wind index (UVI)) based on the characteristics of the wind circulation are used to identify the onset and the demise dates and the intraseasonal variability of the rainy season over the west central Brazil (WCB) region. All the fourβindex time series have a high correlation with the precipitation series over WCB. The UVI, MWSI and the 850ZWI represent very well the intraseasonal variability (break and active periods) of the precipitation over WCB and the 850ZWI is also useful for identifying the onset dates. ## Abstract The South American Monsoon System (SAMS) is characterised by intense convective activity and precipitation during austral summer. This study investigates changes in the onset, demise and duration of SAMS during 1948β2008. The results show a significant change in these characteristics in
A high-resolution pollen record (sampling interval averages 820 years) has been obtained from ODP Site 1144 (water depth 2037 m), northern South China Sea. The 504-m sequence (in composition length) covers the last 1.03 million years according to micropaleontological and isotopic stratigraphy. The p
