β¦ Synopsis
Globalization has brought about a need for better information and, more importantly, a need to translate information into knowledge and to link that knowledge to decision-making and strategy. The year 1998 was especially marked by worldwide economic turbulence, and the Asian economic crisis affected emerging economies most severely. More and more South African companies are realizing that to survive, let alone prosper in a changed competitive environment, they will have to take a new view of that environment. They have also come to realize the value of knowledge building and pooling to secure a competitive edge over competitors that have access to very much the same information. It follows that by conducting competitive intelligence effectively, these factors can be addressed and can put companies on the road to recovery and higher profits. The need for competitive intelligence among South African companies is vast.
