As the picture format for television extends hi both size and sharpness, the accompanying sound also needs to be reassessed. This paper discusses some improvements being proposed for the HD sound system and the restrictions within which these proposals will have to be made to work. It is shown that there is room for improvement over and above stereo with television, but equally the constraints of the domestic environment must not be overlooked. A hierarchical approach is, therefore, suggested.
