✦ Synopsis

FLOW

A simple theory for sound dissipation associated with steady flow losses in a cross flow tube bank is presented. The tube bank is considered as a special uniform medium whose overall characteristic parameters are determined by measured mean flow data. The force exerted on the fluid by the rods or other boundaries is represented as a velocity-squared proportional body force acting on a control volume within the special uniform medium.

The assumption is made that the acoustic behaviour can be determined by perturbing the variables of the flow equations. The theory is compared with results obtained for the dissipation in an experimental tube bank, and its applicability to dissipation in fully developed turbulent pipe flows is investigated by comparison with previously published experimental data.
