โœฆ Synopsis

An asymptotic solution is obtained to the problem of the generation of sound by a two-dimensional model of a turbulent eddy of non-uniform density or temperature. The eddy consists of a cylindrical region of fluid of uniform vorticity contained within an irrotational flow of different density. The analysis furnishes an exact solution in which the r61es of the various possible aerodynamic source terms are explicitly revealed. In particular the model provides detailed confirmation of the turbulent dipole mechanism proposed by Morfey [I ].

The noise generation by the turbulent mixing of a heated, subsonic jet and its cold surroundings is discussed, with the help of the method of matched asymptotic expansions, separately for an inner region where hydrodynamical characteristics dominate and for an outer region where sound fields prevail
