Abstract

Sounds and sound emitting structures of larval rock lobsters are compared with those of juvenile and adult. The rasping sound, typical of disturbed juveniles and adults, is not produced by the puerulus, although file and plectrum are developed. The sound is, however, heard in the postpuerulus. Sound characteristics vary with age, individual and species, and therefore are of little value to spiny lobster taxonomy.
