✦ Synopsis

Previous mug shot sorting studies demonstrated that several techniques can successfully retrieve pictures using descriptions or similarity judgements (Shepherd, 1986;Levi et al., 1995). No study has compared the eectiveness of descriptions to similarity judgements for this task and the existing studies report their results in ways that limit comparison across studies. An experiment (N 96) is reported that replicates the eectiveness of both methods, supports sorting by description as superior, and oers suggestions for reporting results using a common metric.
